Restylane, Juvederm & Radiesse: Which Dermal Filler Is Right for You?

Also known as a liquid facelift, over the years, dermal fillers have earned a reputation for being the go-to treatment for those looking to obtain the benefits of a facelift, without the cost or downtime of a surgical procedure. But with all the dermal fillers on the market today, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. From understanding the areas certain fillers treat to how long the results will last, you’ll be equipped with the right information to help you and your doctor find one that’s going to give you the results you’ve been looking for. Here are the most popular dermal fillers we offer, plus details on each that can help you decide which one might be right for you.

Restylane – This dermal filler is perfect for adding natural volume that results in smoother wrinkles and less visible folds. While containing hyaluronic acid, Restylane has shown to stimulate collagen production in the skin, making it a go-to treatment for those not only looking to reduce superficial wrinkles, but wanting to add volume to the lips.

With results lasting about six months for most patients, as soon as you receive the injection, you’ll be able to see the difference. Also, like other injectables, there’s little to no downtime.

Juvederm – Much like Restylane, Juvederm contains hyaluronic acid that help create a smoother and more supple appearance. This gel implant is typically used for treating moderate wrinkles and creases in the lower facial area, plumping the lips, and firming up the area under the eyes.

As with other dermal fillers, patients will be able to see its effects immediately with most seeing results last anywhere from nine months to a year, which is a good bit longer than Restylane.

Radiesse – Best used for treating the deeper facial folds and creases, Radiesse is often the perfect solution for the nasolabial folds, or the lines that run down each side of the face from the nose to the mouth. While this injectable aids in restoring the lost volume in those hollow facial areas, it’s also often used to add volume over the cheekbones and jawline.

While patients will see results immediately upon injection, it’s also one of the longer-lasting injectable implants that tends to last a year or more. Of course, due to its longer lasting results, it’s going to cost slightly more than Juvederm and Restylane.

Avoid “Real Housewives” Facelift Results with These 4 Guidelines

While many patients tend to start with dermal fillers for treating facial lines and wrinkles, we all know that these aren’t a permanent fix, leaving you with the need for follow up treatments in order to keep your results. That’s why there are just as many others that are ready to go all-in with a surgical facelift that’s going to give them the lasting results they been longing for.

Finding a surgeon that’s going to be able to give you natural results isn’t always an easy task, and unfortunately, going with the wrong one could leave you with the not-so-natural “Real Housewives” look. Along with selecting the right surgeon, here are four pieces of advice to ensure you get the natural results you desire.

  • Do find a board-certified plastic surgeon. Going cheap is not the way to go when it comes to a facelift, or any surgical procedure for that matter. If you want to avoid any tell-tale signs of a facelift gone bad, you most definitely start by putting your face in the hands of a highly experienced, highly trained surgeon. Spend time talking with your surgeon about the natural results you want to ensure you’re both on the same page.

  • Don’t overuse fillers during a facelift procedure. While it’s common to administer a dermal filler to enhance facelift results, over-doing these fillers can lead to a more bloated or fake appearance.

  • Do lift and tighten to where results look natural. Back in the day, during a facelift, a surgeon would pull the facial skin tight and remove the excess, leaving an unnatural, “windswept” appearance. Today, trained surgeons are going to know the proper way to lift both muscle and tissue under the skin in order to give you more natural results.

  • Do maintain the natural hairline. An unusual hairline is a big indicator of a bad facelift. While many patients think this may be the way to go in hopes of hiding any incisions, this is a very bad idea. There’s no reason to hide these incisions in the hairline as they tend to heal very well.

Hospital or Private Surgery Center: Where Should You Have Your Cosmetic Procedure Done?

While, for various reasons, some cosmetic surgeries are required to be done in a hospital, most others can be performed in a private surgery center like the one at Plastic Surgery Associates of Montgomery. When deciding whether to go with a surgeon located within a hospital, or one in a private facility, you’ll find there are many benefits to choosing a private office. Below, we’ll take a look at the top three reasons you might prefer to have your cosmetic surgery done at a private practice.

  • Specifically designed for cosmetic procedures. Unlike a hospital, everything and everyone in the private surgery center is dedicated to plastic surgery. The equipment, the staff, and even your room was designed around the type of procedure you’ll be having. With this in mind, it’s also important to note that any AAAASF-certified facility is going to be held to the same standards as a hospital.

  • Unequivocal privacy. Since the private surgery center is where you’ll also go for your initial consultation, you’ll be welcomed by friendly faces and team members who already know who you are and what you’re there for. Without having to wait in a crowded room before your surgery, you’ll be able to relax in a private waiting room, and of course, have your very own private recovery area before going home.

  • Lower risks for sickness and infection. Of course, hospitals see a countless number of patients, many of whom are sick. This means your chances of picking up an illness throughout your stay will be increased if you decide to go with a hospital. Since private surgery centers are only performing cosmetic procedures, you’ll be far less likely to pick up any sickness-causing germs throughout your stay.

How Combining Doctor and Aesthetician Service Can Reveal a More Youthful You

For many of us, there comes a time when we just don’t feel our outside appearance matches how we feel within. We feel as young as ever, yet the wrinkles and other signs of aging on our face tend to reveal someone much older, and that’s usually when patients decide that it’s time to make their appearance match how young they feel. Of course, during this time, it’s not uncommon to be overwhelmed at the treatment options out there.

That’s exactly what happens when you visit Plastic Surgery Associates of Montgomery and our Skin Spa. Between the two, we believe we really can make your dreams come true.

From undergoing the less invasive yet effective treatments by our aestheticians, along with the procedures offered by our doctors, you can get ready to discover your best self.

Here are a few services offered by our aestheticians that can help you achieve a more youthful appearance:

BroadBand Light™ Phototherapy – While using pulsed light to restore the skin to its natural condition, this laser is going to help eliminate a range of skin conditions caused by aging and sun exposure.

Chemical Peels – Through the removal of the damaged outer layers of the skin, these peels have the ability to improve the appearance of wrinkles, sun spots, age spots and even overall skin tone.

Professional Skin Care Systems – Along with the treatment offered, our aestheticians can also recommend a wide array of skin care products to aid in reducing signs of aging. From the TNS Essential Serum to the Glo Skin Beauty makeup line, our professionals will help you find the right products to meet your needs.

Take a look a few ways our doctors can help you reduce signs of aging:

Botox Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers – As non-surgical procedures, both Botox and dermal fillers are injected into the face in order to reduce wrinkles. While Botox is geared towards smoothing moderate to severe wrinkles caused by facial movements, fillers aim to reduce wrinkles that have resulted from a loss of collagen.

Face and Neck Lift – Going with a face or neck lift is going to improve signs of aging on the face and neck, while the neck lift entails removing excess skin or altering neck muscles in order to create a smoother neck area.

Eye and Brow Lift – While restoring a more youthful look, a brow or eye lift is going to give a more refreshed, well-rested look to the eye area.

Skin Resurfacing – Often called laser resurfacing or laser peel, this technique uses a carbon dioxide laser to remove layers of damaged or wrinkled skin.

As you can see, there are many different services provided by both our doctors and aestheticians that can truly rejuvenate your skin, leaving your outside appearance as youthful as you feel within.

For a customized treatment plan specifically designed to meet your personal goals, don’t wait – schedule your consultation with Plastic Surgery Associates of Montgomery and our Skin Spa today.

Liposuction: Top 4 Misconceptions and the Facts You Should Know

While it’s common for people to believe that liposuction is a great solution for those looking to effortlessly shed unwanted pounds, this really couldn’t be further from the truth.

With the prime candidate for liposuction being well within their desired weight, most patients who have this procedure have tried to get rid of fat in stubborn areas with diet and exercise, all to no avail.

While this may be the most common misconception about liposuction, it’s far from the only one. Below, we’ll explore the top misconceptions surrounding liposuction, plus, the truth behind them.

Myth #1: Liposuction is a weight loss solution.

Fact – Liposuction is typically recommended for those who are already within 30% of their ideal weight. While it does remove fatty deposits that have proven to be resistant to diet and exercise, it should be thought of as a more contouring procedure that gives you the shape you want in a certain area like the thighs, buttocks, or arms.

Myth #2: Liposuction is only for women.

Fact – Liposuction may commonly be associated with women, but these days, men are just as likely to have the procedure. The main areas men are looking to treat are the abdomen, love handles, and chest, while women tend to want to remove fat from their hips and thighs.

Myth #3: Liposuction isn’t a surgical procedure and doesn’t have any downtime.

Fact – Many believe that because liposuction is typically performed on an outpatient basis, that it’s not a surgical procedure, but that’s just not the case. Your surgeon will likely give you general anesthesia and make several incisions during the surgery. After the procedure, patients typically need a week or more to recover, depending on how many areas were treated. Most patients tend to have some bruising for about a week or two, along with soreness, which typically lasts less than two weeks.

Myth #4: Liposuction results magically last forever.

Fact – Liposuction permanently removes fat, but it doesn’t stop fat from coming back. That being said, the results will last, but it does require effort on your part. If you stop exercising and no longer eat a balanced diet, any weight gain will obviously negatively impact the results.

Now that you know the truth about liposuction, you’re better informed to decide if it might be right for you. If you’re looking for a body contouring procedure that will help you achieve your desired shape in certain areas of the body like the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, upper arms, chin, or neck, then you may be a prime candidate. If this sounds like you, one of our board-certified surgeons is ready to help you achieve your desired results today.

Myths and frequently asked questions about breast augmentation

By Dr. Douglas Robertson, Surgeon at Plastic Surgery Associates of Montgomery

I meet with many different patients every day with varying levels of understanding about breast augmentation.  Most of my patients have the same types of questions, and unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation on the internet about this wonderfully successful procedure.  Women who want to look their best are seeking out the very best options for breast augmentation, and they want to know what to expect, and how it all works.

So I’ve written this blog post to answer some of the more common questions I get about breast augmentation, and also to dispel some myths I still hear from some of my patients.

MYTH:  Bigger is better

No reputable plastic surgeon is going to recommend a breast augmentation that is larger than what works with your natural body size and type!  The truth is, sometimes “Bigger” means more problems down the road! What I like to do is to match the patient’s goals wherever they might be. Sometimes those goals are achievable, and sometimes they’re unrealistic.  Extremely large breasts on a smaller frame could result in some complications, such as the implants bottoming out or can be seen through the skin, which no one is going to be satisfied with in the long run. So it’s definitely important to determine together as doctor and patient what’s going to be appropriate for that individual patient’s particular body frame and breast shape.

What’s best:  saline or silicone gel?

The truth is, this really depends upon the patient and their breast tissue characteristics, and their ultimate goals.  Best for somebody might happen to be the cheapest! Saline is less expensive than silicone for example. However, there’s always a chance that saline implants might show rippling.  It can also really depend upon the operation plan – meaning, is the implant going on top of or under the muscle.

How long will my breast implants last?

How long do they stay in?  Well, if the patient is not having any problems, we don’t recommend you change them out!  Fortunately, there are no wear and tear issues, so there’s no need for interval exchange. So then you might ask:  how will I know if I’m having a problem with my implant? In general terms, problems can show up in the form of a firmer or displaced displaced implant, or a rupture (not as scary as it sounds, as saline implants are simply filled with IV fluid.  The body would simply absorb the fluid, and it would deflate – you’ll definitely know!)

When silicone gel implants rupture, you might not necessarily recognize it right away.  Sometimes patients will notice firmer or softer with a rupture. And if there’s ANY question at all about a potential rupture, we’d do a mammogram to assess the integrity of the implant.

Do breast implants cause breast cancer?

Rest assured that there is very good data to show that breast implants do NOT cause breast cancer.  Annual mammograms are done easily using a displacement view mammography. Patients with and without breast implants get breast cancer at the same rate.  In short, having breast implants doesn’t delay the detection of breast cancer.

How does a breast augmentation actually work?

So we begin with a consultation first – we evaluate your goals and objectives, and determine a plan.  The day of surgery arrives, and you can expect for the operation takes an hour and 20 minutes. This is an outpatient procedure with full anesthesia performed right here in one of our operating suites.  Some other practices do their breast augmentations under local with sedation. WE find it’s a lot easier to have patient under full anesthesia. First of all, it’s more comfortable for the patient. Secondly, it’s a more controlled setting, and for most patients, extremely safe.  You can expect to spend around one hour in recovery, and then you go home. We see you back a few days post-op for a dressing change. After a few more days, you can finally shower. I have my patients wear a support bra 4-6 weeks day and night. Pain? Yes, you’ll be sore for a few days but most of my patients are off all pain meds by a week.  We recommend no strenuous activity for 4-6 weeks, but within a few days of the operation, our patients resume normal daily activity.

My breasts aren’t the same size.  Is that a problem with a breast augmentation?

Rest assured that almost every woman has some kind of minor breast asymmetry.  During our consultation, we take that into account by identifying all the asymmetries when planning the operation so we get the best result as possible.  Sometimes it’s not possible to get exact perfect symmetry but we try to improve upon it.

Hopefully, I’ve given you some information that makes you more enthusiastic about getting the breast augmentation that you’ve always wanted.  Feeling great about your appearance, loving the way your clothes fit afterward, and feeling like you now have the body you’ve always dreamed of are the glorious benefits of breast augmentation – and nothing makes me happier than seeing a happy patient post-op!

The 6 Most Common Surgical Procedures for Facial Rejuvenation

By Dr. Michael Paul Bentley, Surgeon at Plastic Surgery Associates of Montgomery

Many women put on their makeup in the morning, look at themselves in the mirror, and often scrutinize their appearance as they start to see those early signs of aging. They try over-the-counter products that may help things for a while, but then it gets to the point where they really want to see results. That’s when they come to see me to find out what we can do to improve these areas. Of course, we first go over the nonsurgical ways to enhance those signs of aging, but then we discuss the surgical procedures for facial rejuvenation that are available.

Whether a non-surgical, more temporary solution, or long-term surgical solution is the best option, solely depends on the patient. I have some patients that come in, and for one reason or another, whether due to their jobs or other activities going on in their life, they want to do something with a minimal amount of downtime, like injectable fillers. Then, I have others, I believe that just don’t want to do temporizing measures.  They want the solution that’s going to fix the problem, and those are the ones that go straight to surgery.

If you’re ready to fix the problem once and for all, here’s a look at the six most common surgical procedures for facial rejuvenation:

  1. Eyebrows – One of the things we start with is brow lifting and brow positioning. Endoscopic brow lifts are done through small incisions hidden in the hair. We don’t have to shave any hair or anything to do these. You can reposition the brow and get rid of the vertical frown creases between the eyebrows while softening those muscles up, giving a more youthful look.
  2. Eyelids – We also do procedures of the eyelids where we remove excess skin on the eyelid to get a more refreshed, well-rested appearance. We also get rid of the bags underneath the eyes that cause you to look tired and aged.
  3. Cheeks – What we do to here is rejuvenate the cheek as we lift it and give it more volume if necessary. At the same time, we’re also cleaning up the jawline to get a nice, smooth appearance.
  4. Neck – This is where everybody deposits fatty tissue, which results in the loss of that nice acute angle where we transition between the neck and chin. We tighten the muscle there while removing some skin and fat in that area to improve the jawline.
  5. Nose – As we age, we all get a deepening of the nasolabial creases, which are the parenthesis marks on either side of the nose. Some may know these as smile or laugh lines. We can restructure these areas and reduce the depth of the creases, making them much less visible.
  6. Mouth – We also do procedures to enhance the oral commissures, or the corners of the mouth. This area turns down with time, giving you a sad or angry appearance. We can lift and smooth out this area to greatly improve those signs of aging.

While there are many facial rejuvenation procedures we perform, there are of course more temporizing measures that can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the area we’re treating. These temporary solutions, like Botox and injectable fillers, can make things better for patients that really aren’t ready for surgery or can’t work it into their schedules just yet.

On the other hand, many of my patients are ready to fix the problem with a more permanent solution. That’s when we go forward with surgical facial rejuvenation procedures like those of the eyelids, eyebrows, cheeks, neck, nose and mouth. With these procedures, we can make our patients look 10 to 15 years younger while achieving a more permanent solution, which is the ultimate goal of many that walk in our door.
