Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
Upper arm skin can become loose and flabby as you age or as a result of extensive weight loss and regardless of your efforts, you cannot achieve the toned arms you desire because of excess skin. With an arm lift, your doctor will consult with you and determine what specific areas need to be tightened to look and feel more youthful. With your safety in mind, a tailored plan will be created to achieve your desired results.
What is an Arm Lift?
An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, creates a more toned, proportionate appearance by reducing excess skin and fat between the underarm and the elbow, reshaping the upper arm for smoother skin and contours.
For patients who have lost a large amount of weight, the upper arm excess usually crosses the armpit and involves loose skin that extends onto the chest region. An arm lift, or upper arm reduction surgery, usually involves reducing the skin through an incision that runs on the inner or undersurface of the upper arm, sometimes crossing onto the armpit.
My Arm Lift
After consulting with your doctor about an arm lift, your incision length and pattern will be determined by the amount and location of the excess skin to be removed. The incisions may extend from the underarm to just above the elbow and are usually placed on the inside or back of the arms. If fat needs to be removed from the arm, liposuction will be used in conjunction with the arm lift.
Following your procedure, results can be seen almost immediately. However, the initial results may be somewhat skewed because of swelling and bruising. Once the swelling and bruising goes away, your upper arm will be more toned with an improved appearance and feel.
Recovery
Recovery is an important consideration when making the decision about an arm lift. Your doctor may wrap your arms with compression garments and ask you to keep your arms elevated above the heart for a few days. The return of normal arm and hand function can be expected within a few weeks, possibly longer.
Your surgeon will provide specific post-operative instructions based on the technique and extent of your procedure. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions to heal properly and ensure the greatest results. It is crucial to take time for yourself and rest. Remember, you are doing this for you.
