Liposuction
Although there is no substitute for dieting and exercise, liposuction can remove those stubborn areas of fat that don't respond to traditional weight loss methods. Liposuction removes fat to slim and reshape specific areas of your body, improve your proportion and, ultimately, help you feel better about yourself. By creating an individualized procedure, our doctors will help you achieve a better quality of life and reflect a healthier you.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction removes localized or regional excess fatty tissues and helps sculpt the body in specific areas. With the procedure, we are able to offer the latest techniques:
- Traditional liposuction, simply defined as surgical suctioning of excess fat deposits
- The tumescent, or super-wet technique that requires an infusion of saline solutions, with added adrenaline and anesthetic, prior to removal of excess fat
- Ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty, or UAL, where ultrasonic energy is used to liquefy excess fat prior to surgical suctioning
These techniques may be used to reduce localized fat deposits of the:
- Cheeks, chin and neck
- Upper arms
- Breast or chest area
- Back
- Abdomen and waist
- Hips and buttocks
- Thighs
- Inner knee
- Calves and ankles
Liposuction can be performed alone or used with additional plastic surgery procedures such as a facelift, male or female breast reduction, or a tummy tuck.
My Liposuction
Liposuction is a highly individualized procedure that requires careful consideration of your specific concerns and the area you wish to improve. During your consultation, your doctor will evaluate your skin tone and elasticity, as well as fat density and distribution, and will determine the safest and most appropriate techniques for you.
All liposuction techniques require incision in or near the area to be suctioned. In some cases, the incision may be so small that no stitches are required for closure. Secondary procedures may sometimes be recommended to reduce excess skin.
Recovery
Initial healing will include swelling, numbness, soreness, bruising and discomfort. After surgery, you will likely experience fluid drainage from the incisions. To control swelling and to help your skin better fit its new contours, you will be fitted with a snug elastic garment to wear over the treated area for a few weeks.
Recovery is an important consideration when making the decision about liposuction. We realize that you may lead a busy life – whether you are a parent, professional or both – and the amount of recovery time is crucial. Below, you can gain a better understanding of your recovery time.
- Within five to seven days of surgery, you may return to normal activity, with no heavy lifting
- Any sutures will be removed within 10 days, possibly allowing a return to work, as long as no heavy lifting is required
- Bruising and swelling will disappear within the first few weeks
Your surgeon will provide specific post-operative instructions based on the technique and extent of your procedure. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions to heal properly and ensure the greatest results. It is crucial to take time for yourself and rest. Remember, you are doing this for you.
